April is Poetry Month

Canadians celebrate poetry every April, the month T.S. Eliot called “the cruellest month” in his famous poem “The Waste Land.” Clear away April showers with GVPL: join us for poetry-inspired events and take us up on some reading recommendations.

For ages 13-18. Interested in spoken word poetry? Attend regular coaching with past City of Victoria Youth Poet Laureate Ann-Bernice Thomas and experiment with words and rhythm, then watch or participate in the Victorious Voices High School Slam Championships.

Book Spine Poetry
Celebrate Poetry Month by joining City of Victoria’s Poet Laureate Yvonne Blomer as she demonstrates how to create your own inspired poem by vertically stacking and arranging library book spines. Drop-in.

Paper Crafts and Poetry
For Adults. Ontario-based poet Penn Kemp will kick off this program with a performance of her poetry, followed by a paper craft led by artist Terry Ann Carter. Fold paper into a concertina-style, accordion book, using hand-written letters, words and text to decorate the interior pages. Use water colour pencil crayons to add embellishments to your keepsake book.
