February is Black History Month

Canadians honour the legacy and culture of black Canadians, past and present, with Black History Month. This February, consider reading a book by an eminent black writer and participate in one of GVPL’s free events in celebration of black Canadians.

AN EVENING OF JAZZ, BLUES AND SPOKEN WORD AT THE BELFRY
In partnership with the BC Black History Awareness Society and the Belfry Theatre, we invite you to join us for an evening of jazz, blues and spoken word poetry featuring the Maureen Washington Quartet and City of Victoria’s 2016 Youth Poet Laureate, Ann-Bernice Thomas. Drop-in.

UNDERGROUND RAILROAD: ADAM’S JOURNEY TO THE PROMISED LAND
For ages 11-14. While the earliest black pioneers of BC came to Victoria by ship, others came to
Canada by a much more difficult and dangerous route: the Underground Railroad. Join us to learn
about the Underground Railroad, including one man’s journey, escaping slavery to a new life as a free
man in Canada. Presented by the BC Black History Awareness Society.
