Assistive Services

Meeting your unique needs

GVPL offers support to our users with special needs to help them access our resources and facilities. All of our 11 branches are wheelchair accessible and have wheelchair-accessible computer workstations.

Services for the print disabled

We provide collections, resources and services to meet the needs of patrons who cannot read or access regular print material because of a print disability due to blindness or visual impairment, or a physical or learning disability.

Our Collections for the Print Disabled include large-print books and audiobooks, as well as access to materials through the Centre for Equitable Library Access (CELA) and the National Network for Equitable Library Service (NNELS).

If you would like help selecting materials due to a print disability, please fill out the Assistive Services form. For help, please call Customer Service at 250-940-GVPL (4875).

Services for patrons with mobility issues

GVPL offers assistance to our patrons who have difficulty moving around the library and collecting their own materials. A staff member will work with you to find out what kinds of items you enjoy, and then will collect the material for you.

This service is available at all branches during regular operating hours. To apply, please fill out the Assistive Services form. For help, please call Customer Service at 250-940-GVPL (4875).

Visiting Library Services

If you can’t visit the library, we’ll bring the library to you.

Library patrons who are unable to visit the library in person can receive materials at home, delivered by a GVPL volunteer. Patrons using this service have extended loan periods and are exempt from late fees. Library staff can provide telephone or Internet support for renewals and requesting specific titles.

This free service is available to any of our patrons who are confined to their homes or residences for more than three months because of age, illness or frailty.

GVPL staff will select material to fit our patrons’ interests, choosing from regular and large-type books, DVDs, music CDs, magazines, multilingual material, and books on CD. Items are delivered once a month by our volunteers.

To apply, please read the information sheet, then fill out the application form.

Reading Preferences Form: to be filled in after submitting your application.

For help, please call 250-940-GVPL (4875).

Our Visiting Library Services is also available for seniors’ residences in Greater Victoria. GVPL will deliver a selection of material to be deposited for an extended period of time at seniors’ residences.
