The Teen Zone Project

See the work of Teen Council in action - check out the Teen Zone at your local branch!  Teen Council helped review library youth spaces last year, and conducted a peer-based survey to find out what you want!  Using information from our  Teen Zone Survey Report, we helped select new furniture, generously funded by The Victoria Foundation.  We're still hard at work, evaluating the new Teen Zones!  Find out more about the Teen Zone project >>

Teen Council at Victoria Symphony Splash

Teen Council members Jadzia, Charlotte and Allison entertained kids with crafts, prizes in a fishing booth, and a good ole candy guess at the Family Fun Zone.  Clifford the Big Red Dog made a hit with kids and adults alike as many people wanted to have their photos taken and hug the lovable children's book celebrity.  Thanks to Caeleigh, Sidney, Alex and Alexis for their remarkable enthusiasm despite the heat!

Meet Some Of Our YAC Members

Hi visitors, and welcome to the Teen Council page. My name is Ryan, and this is my third year of volunteering at the library. My personal interests and hobbies include biking, swimming, playing video games, watching films and skiing. I also enjoy reading (mostly crime and comedy) - the main reason as to why I join programs at GVPL. For any teen who feels as though the voice of the teen community's voice in the library ought to be heard, the Teen Council is a must.

I’m Paula, and although I’ve been volunteering at the Library for a few years, this is my first year doing Teen Council. I’m looking forward to all the great experiences I’ll have with Teen Council. It’s really fun and the snacks are tasty. During my free time, I love reading, swimming, cycling, laughing, yoga, and baking.

My name is Daphne and this is my second year as a Teen Council member. I enjoy reading, painting, drawing, singing, horseback riding, skiing, and most importantly, VOLUNTEERING IN THE TEEN COUNCIL! My friend introduced this volunteer to me last year, and it has been a great experience. One aspect that I enjoy the most is that I get to go to conferences and many other more events introduced to the members. It's a fabulous opportunity, it looks great on your resume, and the library needs YOUR VOICE! Hope to see you there!

Hi, my name is Madison, and this is my first year on the GVPL's teen council. I am excited about the experiences and volunteer activities that I will have this year. In my opinion, books are amazing as they transport me on wonderful and, sometimes, scary adventures. Teens have the opportunity to use our public libraries, and I am looking forward to making them aware of the resources available. In my spare time, I enjoy reading, writing, playing the violin, hanging out with friend, and playing a squash match or two!

Hey everyone, I'm Shengsheng, known as Sheryl...since pronouncing my name is a nuisance...it's similar to Shungshung in English if you want to give it a go~

I like languages, swimming, piano, reading, writing especially, arts, annnnnnd people! I love people, love meeting them, knowing them, and bonding, conflicting, debating, chilling out with them…you get the idea. It’s partially why I find languages so fascinating too. Communication! The absolute essence of interaction! I’m new to Victoria, but the friendly atmosphere really makes me feel at home. So I’m really excited about volunteering in the YAC, giving back some friendliness to the community!

Hi, my name is Jadzia, this is my final year in Teen Council and I enjoy reading, watching tv, volunteering at the library and playing music with various groups around town and in my school.

Greetings, humans who have stumbled upon the Teen Councilpage!

I'm Holly and I've been volunteering at the library for three years. The library is superb because that's where books are found! I'm also into all sorts of wacky things like violin, writing, drama, social justice, slam poetry, sci-fi, pretentious words, gauntlets, and chocolate. Mmm... the snacks are another reason why we love Teen Council. Come on, someone had to say it.

Hi! My name is May, AKA Spider-May, and I have been known to talk really fast. This is my first year in Teen Council and I'm super excited.   I like a lot of things. Like books, reading, cats, food, sleeping in, and music. I play cello and trumpet and love going to the Opera and Symphony. I also swim, play volleyball, and completely don't understand football. Chemistry is my favourite thing in the world. I would like to say that I keep my room impeccably organized, but that plan is failing miserably. I think that libraries are an important part of any city, and I'd like to help make ours a better place for teens.

Hello:)

My name is Anna and this is my first year in Teen Council. I enjoy reading, writing, painting, dance and travel. It's so great to have a voice in Library projects and meet cool people! Also the snacks are great... You should come check it out, we are doing some fun things this year with the Library's teen zone and much more. Hope to see you there!

Hello! My name is Allison, and this is my fifth year on the Teen Council. I enjoy being part of the council because I love the library and want to improve its teen services. I also like reading, playing the violin, learning Latin and Greek, knitting, baking, and cross-country skiing.

Teen Council includes youth ages 13-18 from all over the Greater Victoria region.  This is a unique volunteer experience to add to your resume.  You will get to work on special library projects, offer your opinion, meet other teens and have fun.  Teen Council meets monthly and runs from September-December, and January-June. Summer schedules vary.  Check out our teen programs to register for the next session.  If you are new to TC, please complete a Teen Volunteer Referral Form and bring it to the first meeting.

For more information about volunteering at the library, contact teens@gvpl.ca or check out our teen programs or see Teen Volunteers at the Library.

Our teen volunteers are amazing, as always! On Feb. 11, I accompanied three teens from our Youth Advisory Council members and one brave last-minute teen recruit to the BC Booksellers Association (BCBA) Education Day at Laurel Point Inn. The teens did a great job answering a wide range of questions about their reading and book selection habits to a room full of rapt independent booksellers and publishers, well over 50 people in all. The session lasted for around one hour and questions ranged from what book covers the teens prefer, to favorite genres, to the influence of librarians/booksellers on their book choices, and beyond. The teens spoke articulately and demonstrated their great senses of humour. I spoke a bit about some of our teen programs at GVPL and made a number of contacts with book publishers, which hopefully will build up our supply of ARCs for our increasingly popular ARC Club. The teens were rewarded with a great round of applause, a bookbag full of ARCs, and some extra volunteer hours for their reference letters. All in all, a pretty great way to spend a Saturday!
