Victoria, B.C. — Maureen Sawa, Chief Executive Officer of the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL), has announced she will retire in August 2026 after more than 15 years leading the organization.
“Serving as CEO for the past 15 years has been a privilege and an honour,” said Sawa. “I am grateful to the Board of Trustees, my colleagues, our partners, and GVPL staff for their dedication and support. Together, we have strengthened our services and reinforced the library’s role as a vital community hub. I am so proud of everything we have accomplished.”
During her tenure, GVPL has consistently ranked among Canada’s most well-used urban library systems, with one of the highest circulation rates per capita nationally. Guided by Sawa and with the expertise of GVPL staff, the library has introduced community-inspired programs and new technologies. It has also advanced initiatives such as eliminating overdue fines, strengthening partnerships, and developing the Emerging Local Authors Collection, which has showcased more than 1,600 titles by over 1,200 local authors and illustrators.
“Maureen has guided GVPL through growth and challenges, ensuring the library continues to evolve to meet the needs of our library‑loving community,” said Duncan Cavens, Chair of the GVPL Board of Trustees. “Her vision, stewardship, and advocacy for the special role of libraries have left GVPL well positioned for the future. On behalf of the Board, we extend our deepest gratitude for her outstanding contributions.”
The GVPL Board of Trustees has established a search committee and will begin recruitment for a new CEO in the coming weeks. Sawa will remain in her role until August 2026 to support a smooth transition.
