Accessibility
We are committed to making the library a welcoming and inclusive place for everyone. That includes people with visible and invisible disabilities, people who are new to accessibility supports, and those supporting family members or friends.
Our approach is simple. We remove barriers wherever we can. We design our spaces, services, and collections so more people can read, learn, connect, and take part in community life. We know we won’t get everything right the first time, so we’ll keep listening, learning, and improving as needs change.
Registering for print accessibility
Some of our services require you to register for print accessibility. The process is simple and is based on self-identification. You don’t need a doctor’s note or any formal documentation. To register, ask the staff at any branch, or call our customer service line. If you’re new to accessibility services, we can help you understand your options and find what works best for you.
Accessible spaces
Our goal is to make every visit as smooth as possible. All GVPL branches offer wheelchair-accessible entrances, accessible washrooms, and height-adjustable computers. Each branch may have additional features. Some spaces, like study pods, may not be fully accessible due to size. Please check each branch page for details before you visit.
In general, you can expect:
Entrances and getting here
- Step-free or ramped entrances
- Accessible parking (at most locations)
Inside the library
- Wide aisles for easy movement
- Automatic or push-button doors
- Elevators in multi-level branches
- Accessible washrooms with grab bars
- Height-adjustable service desks
Adaptive computers
Each library branch has at least one adaptive computer. These are equipped with:
- Height-adjustable desks
- Large print keyboards
Print-accessible collections
We offer materials in many formats so you can choose what works best for you.
Catalogue and digital library
Borrow large print books, ebooks, and audiobooks from our catalogue or digital library. Many digital apps that come with your library card, like Libby, include features like adjustable text and screen reader support.

Specialized collections
With a library card, you can borrow from collections offered by CELA (Centre for Equitable Library Access) and NNELS (National Network for Equitable Library Service). This includes Victor Readers, which can play DAISY audiobooks. Victor Readers can also play regular audio CDs, MP3 formats, and receive audiobooks through CELA’s Direct to Player service.

Storytime programs
Accessible storytime programs for children and families ensure that all children, along with their families and caregivers, can fully participate in library experiences. Our storytime programs are designed with accessibility in mind, through planning, using accessible materials, and creating welcoming and accessible spaces.
Accessible website and digital content
Our website is open 24/7. We work to make it easy to use for people with a wide range of needs. Our website follows Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA compliance, and we’ve made sure to test the site with people with lived experience.
