Victoria, B.C. – The Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) is bringing back its 100 Books to Read Before Kindergarten list, a well-established early literacy resource that has supported families and caregivers across Greater Victoria for years.
“Reading together is one of the simplest and most powerful ways families and caregivers can support a child’s development,” said Vicki Neilson, Library Services Librarian. “This list helps take the guesswork out of choosing books, providing a starting point.”
The list returns following a temporary pause to allow for a thoughtful review and update. Its relaunch reflects GVPL’s ongoing commitment to early literacy services that support children and caregivers both in the library and at home. In 2025 alone, more than 13,700 children and caregivers participated in GVPL’s Baby Time, Family Storytime, and StoryWalk programs.
“Our program attendance shows how eager families and caregivers are to connect through reading,” added Neilson. “This list builds on that momentum by helping extend those experiences into everyday life, including mealtimes.”
The relaunch coincides with Family Literacy Week, taking place January 26 to 31, 2026. As part of the week, GVPL will offer StoryWalks at the Central Branch on Thursday, January 29, from 10:30 am to 12:30 pm, and at the Juan de Fuca Branch on Saturday, January 31, from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm, along with additional drop-in activities at branches across the system.
