New Mobile-First Website Makes It Easier to Connect with GVPL Services and Resources
Victoria, B.C. — On September 2, the Greater Victoria Public Library (GVPL) launched a new, modernized website, strengthening equitable digital access for the community. GVPL’s new online experience makes it easier to find programs, search the catalogue, manage library accounts, and access digital resources. GVPL’s digital library and services are available anytime, anywhere on our new website at gvpl.ca.
More than half of visits to GVPL’s previous website came from mobile devices. The new website was built using a mobile-first approach and features simpler navigation and clearer pathways to the library’s most-used services. In the first week since launch, 25,655 people visited the GVPL website, reinforcing growing community engagement with digital services and access.
Accessibility was a priority throughout the project. GVPL tested the website with people who use screen readers, keyboard navigation, and other assistive technologies, incorporating their feedback to improve navigation, content, and overall usability. The website was designed to meet Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 Level AA standards.
“Our website is one of the main ways people connect with the library,” said Maureen Sawa, GVPL CEO. “We wanted to create a welcoming experience that is intuitive, accessible, and easy to use. Feedback from community members helped shape the new site, and we’re excited to share it with everyone.”
Visitors to the new site can:
- Find programs and events by date, location, and audience
- Search the catalogue and manage their library account
- Browse eBooks, audiobooks, streaming services, and other digital resources
- Find information about branches, services, and collections
User research and testing were part of the process from design through development. GVPL will continue to make improvements based on feedback from the community and how people use the site.
Community members can explore the new website at gvpl.ca.
The development of the new website was supported through a one-time Library Enhancement Grant. We gratefully acknowledge the financial support of the Province of British Columbia through the Ministry of Housing and Municipal Affairs.
