Our interlibrary loans service allows you to borrow books, microfilms and print materials not owned by the Greater Victoria Public Library from other library systems in B.C. and Canada.
Eight active requests per cardholder are permitted at one time.
Please search the GVPL catalogue for your title before proceeding with a request.
Items Available through Interlibrary Loan
• Books, microfilms and journal articles/photocopies only. E-books, DVDs, CDs and other audio-visual formats cannot be borrowed through Interlibrary loan.
• Items not already owned by GVPL.
• Books published in the last calendar year, beginning after April 1 of the current year. (E.g. If a book is published in January 2016, it becomes available for Interlibrary loan on April 1, 2017.)
Requesting an Interlibrary Loan
Step 1 – Search GVPL’s catalogue to make sure we don’t already own the book
Step 2 – Search Outlook Online to see if the book is available at another library in B.C. From the search results, click the title you would like to request. If you see multiple results for the same title, click on the result with the highest number of Owning Libraries. Click Request This Item and fill out the form.
If you do not find the item at GVPL nor through Outlook Online, please fill out our Interlibrary loan request form.
Microfilm and Photocopies
For microfilm and journal article/photocopy requests, please fill out our Interlibrary loan request form.
Fees and Charges
Some lending libraries charge a nominal fee for an interlibrary loan. Please indicate on your request form the maximum amount you are willing to pay. Fees will be added to your library account when the interlibrary loan is received. The fees must be paid before you can check out your item.
Once your item arrives, you have five days to pick it up. If it’s not picked up, your account will be charged $1.00.
The overdue charge for an interlibrary loan is $1.00 per day. If the material is lost or damaged, you are responsible for any costs set by the lending library.
Interlibrary loans can take up to four weeks to process, depending on the response time, location and shipping mode of the lending library.
